Journey

Starting an independent contractor

Practical, step-by-step guidance to help creative organisations and businesses start a new independent contractor.

Take the journey

Making your workplace fair, safe and respectful doesn’t happen in one go — it’s a journey.

Do I have to do this?  It depends. Some independent contractors are entitled to super. If they are, you need to collect their super details so you can make contributions. You need to get these details before their first invoice so you can pay super at the same time as you pay their invoice.

Do I have to do this?  This depends on whether you want the independent contractor to follow them. It’s unreasonable to expect an independent contractor to follow your policies if they don’t know about them.

Child safety inductions explain what child safety means and what the rules and standards are when interacting with children and young people. They are for any independent contractor who will, or could reasonably, work with children or young people.

Do I have to do this?  No but it can significantly help you meet your legal obligations to create a safe workplace for children and young people. If you have children or young people in your workplace, we strongly recommend it.

We acknowledge the many Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and honour their Elders past and present.

We respect their deep enduring connection to their lands, waterways, and surrounding clan groups since time immemorial. We cherish the richness of First Nations peoples’ artistic and cultural expressions. We are privileged to gather on this Country and to share knowledge, culture and art, now and with future generations.
